ASIN: Treatment
From Adam to today (you and me), we are all effected by ASIN—A Sin—issue. Each of us display (or have within us) at least one—but most likely more than one—symptom. The reason that we sin is because we are born spiritually dead in trespasses and sins. [Ephesians 2:1] We have a sin nature bent toward sin.
How often is it said that it is not our fault? It is our thoughts and actions, but we can blame it on circumstance, childhood, society, other people, or numerous other things. However, if we are honest, we sin willfully because we chose to. We cannot blame God nor even the tempter, for it is we who choose to disobey the law of God.
There are some who choose not to use the term sin. Perhaps you are one who believes we simply need to turn over a new leaf, read some self-help books, attend seminars, speak to counselors, or even check into a substance abuse center. All of these can help treat the symptoms, but they are limited in what they can do alone. If we refuse to call sin what it is, then we will fail to treat it correctly.
Like any disease, we must be willing to acknowledge it for what it is. Cancer is not something that will simply go away or something that we can take lightly. If we desire to get better, to live longer, we have to fight it aggressively. Same holds true for our sin nature and our sin(s). We must admit that we are a sinner and understand “the wages of sin is death.” [Romans 6:23]
We shall face physical death; for “in Adam all die.” [1 Corinthians 15:22a] However, “the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death”—an eternal death. [Revelation 21:8]
Here are some treatments:
- We can look at creation to know God, to glorify God. [Romans 1:18-21]
- We can fear God. [Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 1:7; Proverbs 9:10]
- We can listen to our conscience. [John 1:9; compare John 8:9; Romans 9:1; 1 Corinthians 8:12; 1 Timothy 4:2]
- We can keep our imaginations and thoughts in check. [2 Corinthians 10:5]
- We can watch our tongue. [James 1:19; James 3:6]
All of these treatments can help us limit and combat ASIN—A Sin—in our lives, but what we really need is the cure.
