ASIN: Symptoms

ASIN—A Sin—is “the transgression of the law.” [1 John 3:4] A Puritan Catechism, compiled by C.H. Spurgeon, defines sin as: any want of conformity to, or transgression of the law of God.

 

Symptoms can range from:

 

Blasphemy: taking the LORD God’s name is vain. It is interesting to note that one does not usually hear names outside of God or Jesus Christ being used to curse. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [Exodus 20:7]

 

Rebellion: disobeying and/or shaming parents. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. [Exodus 20:12]

 

Murder: the hating or killing of someone. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. [1 John 3:15] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: [Jesus—Matthew 5:21, 22a]

 

Fornication: sex outside of marriage. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. [1 Corinthians 6:18] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. [Jesus—Matthew 5:27, 28]

 

Theft: the stealing, taking of something that does not belong to us. [Exodus 20:15]

 

Lying: to bear false witness against our neighbor, to lie for personal gain or to hurt another. [Exodus 20:16]

 

Coveting: to lust, desire after what belongs to someone else. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his [donkey], nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. [Exodus 20:17]

 

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. [1 Corinthians 6:9, 10]

 

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. [Galatians 5:19-21]
